[GSDI Legal Econ] Pitney Bowes to Acquire MapInfo for $408 million

fyi ....  news of Pitney Bowes acquiring MapInfo (for US$ 408 million) follows last year's purchase of Intergraph by an investor group (for approximately US$ 1.3 billion).... and GE Energy's acquisition of Smallworld in 2000 (for approximately US$ 210 million).

Pitney Bowes generally is known for making mail-handling machines which companies use to manage their flow of mail, documents, and packages. Adena Schutzberg at the All Points Blog speculates that Pitney Bowes purchased MapInfo as a means to extend to its clients business-to-business products and services for location intelligence.
