For those who missed it on the SDI-Africa mail list, I thought some of
you might like to keep a 'watching brief' on how this African SDI study
progresses.

Kind regards

Roger

Greetings

The Geomatics Department at the University of Cape Town in South Africa
is conducting a study on the Status of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI)
implementation in Africa. The research is being done by Dr. Julian Smit
and Prestige Makanga. The purpose of the exercise is to evaluate the
extent to which Africa and African Governments have realised the need to
prioritize SDI initiatives. A lot of research effort has gone into
investigating the importance of SDI for National and Sustainable
development and the benefits of SDI are now generally known. Despite
such clear benefits, SDI implementation in Africa is being done at a
seemingly slow pace. Would this mean that the benefits are known by the
"wrong people", or another implementation strategy needs to be adopted?

Evaluating the Status of SDI implementation in the African continent
requires a through review at national level. We would like to take
advantage of SDI implementation agencies in different countries to get
an overview of the Status and also identify possible reasons for the
slow implementation in different countries. On these grounds, we
therefore request for you assistance by providing us with information on
the current SDI status in your country. This can take the form of
existing documentation on recent and past SDI events in your country. If
you are not the right person to address this issue but are in a position
to link us up with the relevant people, please feel free to do so. After
your response, you will receive a questionnaire that will be the main
basis of our analysis.

We are looking forward to hearing from you soon. Please feel free to
carbon copy your responses to Dr Smit on Julian.Smit at uct.ac.za

Kind Regards
