Dear sir, dear madam,

The Spatialist project would like to invite you to its workshop on legal aspects of geographic data and spatial data infrastructures, taking place in Leuven, Belgium on 19 March 2010, from 9.30 to 17.00.

As you are well aware, legal issues are often mentioned as an important barrier for the availability of geographic data and the development of SDI. Yet, they have not received as much attention as many of the other aspects involved. This workshop intends to bring together the members of the GI&SDI community whose work or activities are aimed to progress the research, policy and practice with regard to the legal aspects of geographic data and SDI, either as a lawyer or as a researcher or professional in other fields closely related with law or policy. The goal of the workshop is to get an overview of existing research, to consolidate possible synergies and to develop a common research agenda for the future.

The workshop will be divided into four blocks, each with a particular theme. The four themes that will be addressed are privacy and security, intellectual property rights, public-private sector relationships and competition, and the future of legal SDI-research and practice. For each theme,  presentations are given by an expert in the legal domain and an expert in geographic data or SDI issues. These presentations are followed by a discussion, in which you are all invited to participate.

The speakers will prepare an abstract for their presentation. These abstracts and an agenda will be sent to you in the week of 8 March, so you have sufficient time to prepare for the workshop. After the workshop, a book will be published with contributions from the speakers.
