GIS and Database Coordinator
  Umbono Platinum Mining, based in Parktown, Johannesburg, seeks to appoint a GIS and Database coordinator, to work within Umbono’s mineral exploration services. The position is ideally suited to a recent graduate in geography/earth sciences with a major in GIS.
The post would require experience in a GIS environment, using Mapinfo 8.0 and/or Arcview 9.1. Main tasks would include:
- Scanning in, registration, digitising and vectorising of field data (geological maps), using relevant vector to raster software
- Vector table design and capturing of associated metadata
- Production of high quality maps, both digital and hard copy
- Linking geological data into a GIS
- National and international geological database management and maintenance
- Spatial data analysis (gridding and thematic mapping)
  Remuneration will be based on experience. The post is a 12 month contract, with potential for renewal based on work load and project status.

Manager: Geographic Support and Service (Ref. No. 06/09/14)
(One permanent post in Geography Division at Head Office, Pretoria)
(Salary level 13: R473 991 remuneration package per annum) 
  Key performance areas: · Manage geographical operations for household surveys, sampling and sample maintenance · Manage operations for geo-referencing and spatial analysis of  the business frame and geographic support to economic statistics data collection and analysis · Manage geographical support for National Statistical System activities · Provide geographical strategies & support to provincial offices · Manage geographic support to internal and external users · Conduct  spatial  analysis and write reports for internal and external users.
  Prerequisite: · At least three-year tertiary qualification in geography, geographic information systems (GIS), or  town planning, with statistics, demography, or economics · Honours or Masters will be an added advantage · Extensive experience in  working with SA geographical data · Experience with sampling, frames and SA economic indicators, data analysis and report writing · Experience in the management of large GIS supported projects · Knowledge of at least two different GIS software packages including ESRI. 
  Person profile: · This position will suit a person with strong leadership and management skills, who is self-motivated, has initiative, works independently, is a team player, and is good with problem solving · Willingness to work under pressure within targeted deadlines · Ability to work cross-functional, manage and work in a matrix or project environment.
