ECA Fellowships in Poverty Analysis and the Millennium Development Goals for Young African
I. General information
ECA is inviting applications from qualified young African Professionals to the ECA Fellowships for Young African Professionals programme. These Fellowships are in poverty analysis and policy interventions to achieve the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and constitute an important element of the Commission's efforts to assist its member States build capacity in poverty analysis and monitoring, and tracking progress on the Millennium Development Goals.
The Fellowship programme is targeted at young African professionals either currently enrolled in doctoral studies or who have completed their Masters Degree programmes and are intending to proceed to doctoral studies within two years of completion of their Masters Degree studies. The programme aims to provide practical, on-the-job experience to the young professionals as they prepare either for their doctoral studies and/or for possible future career assignments at African development institutions, teaching and research think tanks or member States' government institutions upon completion of their higher degrees. It will also familiarize them with the Commission's broad programmes and services to member States and sub-regional bodies in addressing the poverty and social dimensions of the challenges to Africa's development.
The positions are located in the Headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
II. Conditions
The fellowship is for a period of five months without the possibility of extension or renewal. It is open only to nationals of ECA member states.
- Fellows will receive a lump-sum payment of USD 3,000 per month and a round-trip air ticket to Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.
- Fellows cannot be employed on ECA or UN regular positions within six months of completion of a fellowship period.
- Fellows will agree to a work programme defined mutually with the receiving section, the MDGs/Poverty Analysis and Monitoring Section of the African Center on Gender and Social Development.
III. Responsibilities
- The Fellows will agree to a work programme defined mutually with the hiring manager. Assignments within the respective area of focus may include, but are not limited to, collect, evaluate, interpret, analyse specified statistics and qualitative socio-economic information, especially in the context of Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers and the Millennium Development Goals obtained from a variety of sources; maintain databases; contributing to reports, briefing notes, and assist in the organization and servicing of expert group meetings, workshops, and seminars; and fulfill various other administrative tasks for the final delivery of ECA's services.
- The Fellows will provide copies of reports and any other tangible outputs supported by the fellowship, to ECA.
IV. Competencies
- Professionalism : Good understanding of economic (especially microeconomic) theory and its applications; skill in developing sources for data collection; ability to analyse data; ability to work with microeconomic models and household data; ability to plan and organize own work and to work in support of and in cooperation with others. Good drafting ability.
- Technology awareness: Sound knowledge of the Internet and basic software for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation and ability to use econometrics software.
- Communications: Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Teamwork: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds and respect for diversity.
- Gender Awareness: Ability to identify and address relevant gender perspectives in substantive work.
- Client Orientation: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff and outside collaborators.
V. Qualifications
Education: Advanced university degree in economics or in a related area
Experience: Experience in the field of economic development is required. Knowledge of the Millennium Development Goals, the Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers approach is an advantage.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written English and/or French with knowledge of the other is an advantage.
Other Skills: Ability to write clearly and concisely on economic issues is required.
