GIS Technician, Garden Route Initiatives, Knysna, South Africa

The South African Garden Route Initiative (GRI) is a partnership programme that seeks to conserve and restore the unique biodiversity and sense of place of the Garden Route, while supporting the sustainable management of the area and the delivery of benefits to local communities. The GRI is a component project of the Cape Action for People and the Environment Programme (C.A.P.E.) supported by the Global Environment Facility through the World Bank.

As part of the GRI, a fine-scale biodiversity planning project is being undertaken, the products of which will be used to inform land use planning and decision making, as well as protected area management and off reserve conservation stewardship activities. The production of new base layers forms part of the biodiversity planning project, including vegetation, invasive alien plants and land cover maps.

This will involve digitizing from hard copy maps or scanned images annotated by specialist mappers, populating and generating attribute data, cleaning and supplying final digital data products, generating metadata, and producing final map layouts. All data and metadata must be supplied in a format compatible with the ESRI suite of GIS software.
