This message comes from Jim Rowland of the U.S. Geological Survey Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (USGS EROS). Please take a moment to fill out a short survey (by February 15, 2007), and please circulate widely. The results will feed into a USAID planning process to support remote sensing data distribution and use in Africa. ~Kate

Africa Remote Sensing Data Usage & Needs Survey

The U.S. Geological Survey Center for Earth Resources Observation and Science (USGS EROS) is undertaking a needs assessment and developing an implementation plan for the sustainable acquisition, archiving, distribution, and application (and training) of remote sensing data at African regional remote sensing (RS) centers. We are currently working with:
the AGRHYMET Regional Center in Niamey, Niger;
the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Nairobi, Kenya;
the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Regional Remonte Sensing Unit (RRSU) in Gaborone, Botswana.
This project is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations Environment Programme Global Resouce Information Database (UNEP GRID), and USGS EROS.

We would like to request your participation in a survey on current access to remote sensing data, and current and potential applications of remote sensing data in Africa. We are also interested in learning about the current and potential role of the regional RS centers in Africa in supporting a sustainable program for RS data distribution and applications.

We are aware of recent surveys on similar topics, yet would greatly appreciate your comments and contribution for the objectives mentioned above. We are collaborating with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the U.S., and will work with EIS-Africa, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR and the Satellite Applications Center (SAC) in Pretoria, South Africa, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) centers, and other African institutions, to every extent possible.

The results of this survey will provide USAID with information regarding feasibility and implementation of a sustainable program for RS data distribution and applications in conjunction with a, or several, regional RS centers in Africa.

Thank you for your contribution to this survey, and we welcome any ideas or feedback you might provide.
Please access the survey questions online at http://edcintl.cr.usgs.gov/Africa_RS_Survey by February 15, 2007.

Thank you again for your contribution.
