The beauty of Google?

Spatial Analysis can take place at many different levels, GIS tools are not
alone.

Why have Google Earth and its look-alikes so caught the imagination of the
world - and not just the GI world, but everyone? For most people, Google
Earth is simply a 'point and click' system where they stick their push-pins
into interesting locations on cartographic or raster image backdrops (often
of unknown provenance and quality), then attach a limited amount of
information.OK, new extensions arrive regularly which permit more content of
different types to be attached to that pin. But is there any real 'spatial
analysis' taking place here? Most GIS professionals would say no - and I
would agree with them.

Geospatial Formats Shootout - Part One

Chris Hanson investigates pros and cons of digital formats in part one of
two part series. Since the introduction of the JPEG standard in 1992, the
geospatial industry has been moving towards more and more sophisticated
compression methods. Originally using industry or vendor-specific (typically
uncompressed) formats, the focus moved through adopting and extending
industry standards (GeoTIFF, JPEG, PNG), finally to devising or extending
very advanced new formats (ECW, SID, GeoJP2) with features specifically for
geospatial use.

The global UNSDI Initiative

United Nations organisations need global SDI to support humanitarian aid,
food security, poverty reduction, disaster planning, recovery and
remediation. In October 2005 the United Nations Geospatial Information
Working Group (UNGIWG), at their 6th Plenary Meeting in Addis Ababa, adopted
a resolution to conceptualize and formulate the technical and institutional
requirements for the establishment of a UN Spatial Data Infrastructure
(UNSDI) building on and expanding the work of the six UNGIWG Task Groups
since 2000.
