Research and Monitoring Coordinator, northern Congo Landscapes
Congo Country Program
The Wildlife Conservation Society currently seeks candidates for the position of Research and Monitoring Coordinator for the northern Congo Landscapes (Sangha Trinational, Ndoki-Likouala and Odzala-Ngombe). The successful candidate will oversee the technical development, implementation and coordination of the research and monitoring (biological, socio-economic and law-enforcement) program for the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park and its buffer zones (active logging concessions). This includes supervision of staff and student fieldwork, data analysis and report writing. You will also be responsible for development and implementation of a gorilla habituation program currently underway, and work with the WCS Field Vet Program on animal health issues (ebola, avian influenza, etc).
In addition, you will collaborate with partners in the Ndoki-Likouala Landscape (the Lac Tele Community Reserve is another WCS project) and the Sangha Trinational (WWF manages projects in Lobeke NP in Cameroon and Dzanga Sangha Reserve in CAR), as well as the WCS project in the buffer zones of Odzala NP. Collaboration is also essential with national partners in standardizing landscape and national-level monitoring and GIS data.
Education and Skills:
PhD, preferably in a conservation-related field;
Written and spoken fluency in French and English;
At least three years of experience in protected area research and biological monitoring, preferably in Africa. Ability to work with local communities and supervise socio-economic teams is desirable, and some knowledge of forestry issues is a plus;
Ability to provide training and capacity building in ecological and socio-economic monitoring and research methods;
Strong organizational and proven managerial skills, including proposal writing;
Good communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as strong analytical skills;
Solid background in GIS (ArcView and ArcGIS) required;
Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to work well with a wide variety of people in a team setting, ability to negotiate with government and private sector, and, ideally, a sense of humor.
Interested candidates should send cover letter and CV and/or requests for detailed terms of reference to Bryan Curran at: bcurran at wcs.org, with copies to Pamela Watim, pwatim at wcs.org. This post closes on July 31, 2007.
