"Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade's recent outburst on the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad) was more a statement on the failings of Africa's political leadership than about Nepad. 
In a television interview, Wade described the six-year old, pan-African development programme as "useless" because it had not achieved the purpose for which it was set up. Although he is one of the five African presidents who founded Nepad, Wade's off-handed criticism reflects a sad ending to a story that started with so much promise. 
It also displays the President's surprising misunderstanding of the principles and objectives of Nepad.
