The EC funded and FAO Managed Food Security Analysis Unit for Somalia (FSAU) seeks to hire a consultant with the core responsibilities of GIS Analyst. The consultant will report directly to the FSAU Data Systems Manager, and indirectly to the Technical Manager and Chief Technical Advisor, and in close collaboration with the Nutrition Project Manager of the FSAU; with overall supervision of the FAO Officer-in-Charge for Somalia . The consultant will work in close consultation with all members of the Data Systems Team. The consultant will be responsible for processing and mapping all FSAU data sets as well as secondary data sets. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities
 
·      Prepare appropriate digital maps of Somalia at national, regional and sub-regional levels and other purpose maps (conducting all necessary tasks associated with this—digitizing, scanning, data entry, etc)
·      Maintain FSAU digital map library ensuring maps and related data sets are updated frequently and contain appropriate metadata.
·      Produce high quality analytical maps and other graphical outputs for FSAU publications
·      Liaise with partners to ensure maps are consistent with UN standards, wherever they exist.
·      Generate related subsets/aggregates using logical queries from the Integrated Database System (ensuring data sets from IDS and GIS are from a single data source)
·      Prepare the Climate Data Update on a monthly basis using remote sensing data/products from USGS/FEWSNET, JRC-MARS etc.
·      Ensure FSAU spatial data are appropriately stored and documented (metadata) according to standards
·      Analyze spatial information wherever necessary
·      Maintain and update any maps contained on the FSAU web site.
·      Organize and maintain all FSAU maps and related data sets and produce precise maps and analysis with minimal supervision.
·      Participate in the seasonal (Gu and Deyr) assessments/analysis workshops for food security and nutrition in Somalia . 
 
Minimum Requirements and Skills
·         University Degree in Geography or related field or equivalent training and experience in GIS 
·         3+ years work experience in projects involving mapping, GIS, and remote sensing applications 
·         3+ years work experience using databases, spreadsheets, or similar systems (MS Access, MS Excel, etc).
·         Experience in GIS especially in the Somalia context is an added advantage.
·         Ability and willingness to travel throughout Somalia .
·         Ability to explain technical GIS issues to non-expert audience in a clear fashion.  
·         Must have demonstrated analytical and advanced computer skills, including expert knowledge of GIS technologies, database systems, standard spreadsheets and other relevant software. 
·         Excellent communications skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment with people of different cultural backgrounds.
 
Selection Criteria
 
·         Expert knowledge of GIS software with ESRI and related applications
·         Expert knowledge of Remote Sensing software with IDRISI/ERDAS Imagine, ESRI or related applications (WinDisp, Spaceman etc)
·         Extreme attention to detail and follow up
·         Ability to be a team player in a diverse and high pressure environment
·         Responsible and eager to work
·         Creative and thinks critically
·         Accepts supervision but is self-motivated
