Candidates are sought by the UNHCR Branch Office Nairobi, Kenya for two Geographical Information Systems Clerk positions.  Starting date: as soon as possible. Duration of Assignment: six months / up to 31 December 2007. Type of Contract: service contract. Deadline for applications: 20 March 2007.

Duties and Responsibilities for both positions:
Under the immediate supervision of the Protection Officer, the Geographical Information Systems Clerk will perform the following functions:
(i) Generate Nairobi maps incorporating information related to protection, assistance and durable solutions for refugees in urban setting;
(ii) Generate ProGres reports for the use of GIS software;
(iii) Gather updated GPS data on schools, clinics, police stations asnd other landmarks in refugeehosting neighbourhoods of Nairobi;
(iv) Collaborate updated GPS data with existing digital maps to ensure consistency of geo data information;
(v) Interview refugees in order to collect GPS coordinates of their residences and enter them into ProGres;
(vi) Enter incident-related GPS data into ProGres;
(vii) Perform other duties as required/assigned.   
 
Qualifications for both positions: 
Knowledge and Skills: Completion of secondary school education. University degree or Diploma in Geographic Information System (GIS), or Computer Science with database management or Geography or Surveying or Geometrics or Cartography or any combination of the afore-mentioned fields is desired. Very good reporting and drafting skills
Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in GIS or database management.
Language: Excellent knowledge of English and Kiswahili; knowledge of French or any other UN language an added advantage. 
3. Working Relationships:
Frequent contacts with staff members within the Protection unit and other functional units within the UNHCR Branch Office (Nairobi) and Sub Office (Kakuma) to assist the Kenya operation achieve its protection objectives and targets.
4. Work Relationship:
Frequent contacts both inside and outside the organization and at times outside the duty station involving the exchange of a wide range of information, some of which may be complex.
5. Application of Guidelines:
Appropriate manual or issuance requiring some interpretation. Will at times be required to deal with situations not covered by written instructions.
6. Supervision exercised and guidance given:
May supervise or give guidance to lower level staff.
