Skunkworks-Kenya, an active forum for some of the brightest ICT-techie minds in Kenya to get together to discuss ideas and pertinent issues, now has over 400 people on their mailing list. People have been talking, and now, the emphasize is to "do something." Perhaps Skunkworks-Kenya community members could be mobilized to contribute to (open) geospatial software initiatives/applications Africa and SDI in one shape or form....

Skunkworks gets African roots as techies bond
Young Kenyan “techies” are forming communities to share code and a good time. Skunkworks Kenya is positioning itself, like the techie groups in Silicon Valley, collaborate on technology and possibly develop new business ventures.
The Skunkworks network is a virtual and real-like community of members who are bound by their love and passion for technology. Their contact is facilitated by an online blog, electronic mailing list with almost three hundred members, and weekly forums with between 15 to 20 participants.
Drawing IT gurus, telecom enthusiasts, software programmers, and engineering students, they meet informally to discuss tech trends and applications, solve each others tech challenges, and socialize.

The blog provides notices of weekly Skunkworks meeting where like minded developers get together to share ideas. Skunkworks started the group because it was thought that
- a forum was needed for techies to interact
- techies needed to start DOING things - developing and innovating new ideas eg for local content, user support etc.
- a shift of culture needed to be created - i.e., a passion for being a techie needed fostering.
- ... and many other confused ideas :)
