GIS Internship – 2 positions (EE)
Purpose
Propnet, a division of Transnet Limited, is actively seeking GIS Interns to form part of its Professional Services GIS Team. The GIS Interns will gain practical experience in GIS and related applications while working on several projects undertaken by the Propnet Professional Services Corporate Office. Interns will be required to work 8 hours a day from Monday to Friday for one (1) year, and will be based in Johannesburg.
Job Description
The GIS Interns will perform GIS mapping and analysis tasks in support of creating, maintaining, and improving data sets for Transnet Business Units and other PPS customers. Responsibilities include:
1.        compiling and synthesizing geographic data into a GIS database; 
2.       developing attribute data for all type of industry formats; 
3.       maintaining and updating GIS databases as new data are collected; 
4.       preparing, modifying and updating data sets using different GIS software (including ArcView, ArcInfo, MapInfo, etc.) and other digital media; 
5.       providing graphic support for other Transnet Business Units including the development of maps, charts, and displays; 
6.       operate and maintain PPS’s web mapping services in Mapguide; and
7.       operate and maintain PPS’s space planning services in AutoCAD, including creating, updating, and maintaining drawings and plans.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS         
1.        The minimum qualification required is Matric supplemented by college level course work or vocational training in GIS, cartography, computerised mapping, or a related field; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/ or training involving GIS operations, cartography, and computerised mapping; or 
2.       Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
3.       Each GIS Intern must be a student in good standing at an accredited college or university with coursework in geography, GIS, computer science or a related field; or be a recent graduate in any of the above field.
4.       The incumbents must have working knowledge of ESRI products including but not limited to ArcGIS 9.2, ArcInfo, and ArcView. Working knowledge of MapInfo and AutoCAD software a plus but not a requirement; 
5.       This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication skills, the ability to work well both in team settings and independently; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm.
6.       Knowledge of land asset data attribution and cadastral data is a big plus.
