GIS Biodiversity Training Specialist, Cape Verde
Duration of Initial Contract : 5 weeks 
Language required :  Portuguese 
In partnership with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Government of Cape Verde is currently implementing an integrated programme, which aims at conserving globally significant biodiversity in through the creation and consolidation of the national system of protected areas (PAs). The system encompasses five of ’s nine islands and through a representative sample of six critical terrestrial ecosystems that are unique to the archipelago. The programme was designed to last seven to eight years divided into two subsequent phases. It is also expected to contribute to halting and reversing existing degradation of land and water resources within the protected areas and adjacent landscapes at the same time that it promotes the creation of income-generating alternative livelihood options for local communities that live in the surroundings of the PAs. 
GIS and related research applications are important tools for protected areas management, monitoring and evaluation. In this context, the services of an international GIS expert (consultant) are needed to carry out a tailored GIS training course for the project staff. 
 
The consultant shall be responsible for : 
Developing and implementing an introductory course covering the following: introduction to key aspects of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) ;  basic data structures and functionalities will be explored for  staff to gain a brief working knowledge of GIS ; introduction to ArcGis software;  discussion of mapping, coordination systems and metadata. 
Developing and implementing an advanced course covering the following: applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), intended for staff that have already acquired an introductory knowledge of GIS; strong emphasis on building hands-on skills as well as advanced theoretical knowledge in spatial analysis, statistical and tri-dimension analyses; theory and methods involved in GIS model building, spatial interpolation, and geo-statistical analysis; a practical component involving the use of ArcGIS software package. 
Analysis of GIS vectors, errors and adjustments 
Formatting and standardization of all project’s maps. 
Introduction of the utility of remote sensing for a variety of applications, especially in a GIS environment; introduction to software analysis to explore PA management options and land use-planning strategies. 
Developing a training course manual and brief consultancy report.
