Dear colleagues,

You may recall that after UNGIWG-9 last year I circulated notification that Google had, at that meeting, extended an offer to the entire UN system to prioritize their acquisition of high-resolution satellite images in response to specific requests from the UN. At that time I also offered to coordinate requests from this community and pass them back through Lorant Czaran to Google, although no-one took up the offer at the time. Meanwhile, OCHA have been getting Google to build a comprehensive for the relief and humantitarian camps in Central African Repulic, upon which they are building a number of humanitarian application. I forward Lorant's latest update to you in the hope that may inspire some serious thought as to the the types of locations this group would like to see Google targeting.

FYI: more Central African Republic high-rez imagery loaded on Google Earth!




Dear UNGIWG RS group and interested colleagues, 

I am pleased to announce that likely based on a request we submitted some time ago to the Google Earth (GE) team, in accordance with the verbal agreement we have, a larger number of high resolution satellite  imagery scenes were loaded into GE as of their latest "build". 
Once again, concrete proof that this relationship works very well, and can have a good impact on our work in the field. 

More such requests, coordinated through the UNGIWG geo3d group and verified to avoid duplication and for best possible impact, will be periodically submitted to GE. 
I believe this cooperative model could be the most effective for our work at least in the short term and will provide better geographic data background for large swaths of "hot spots" we are involved with, at a minimal cost and effort on our side. 

I hope our colleagues in CAR appreciate and benefit from this effort, and thanks to Kersten / UNDP CAR who provided the concrete requirements earlier, based on the available Digital Globe coverage files we provided. 

Worth mentioning is that by my estimate about 100 or more scenes were newly loaded for CAR, which puts the "added value"  at nearly 1 million US$ for us, calculating only the price of the imagery scenes if they were purchased... (!!)
