The CEOS Working Group on Education, Training and Capacity Building (WGEdu) is organizing a workshop entitled "Advances in Earth Remote Sensing Applications in Africa" for tertiary-level educators and practitioners in remote sensing, which aim at providing knowledge and information on current and emerging techniques for applying land remotely sensed data to themes relevant to the African continent such as climate change, desertification, water resources, agriculture, disasters, human health, biodiversity, energy  and mineral exploration. A strong "hands-on" component will be included in this event.   The workshop will be hosted by South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-Space Applications Centre) and will be held from 26 to 28 November 2007 at the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa. 
    
Within the limited funds available to the co-sponsors of this workshop, a number of selected participants from African countries with economies in transition will be offered assistance to attend  the workshop.  Otherwise, nominating agencies/organizations are expected to fund  their representative's
participation or are encouraged to find additional sources of sponsorship. 
 
The workshop is open to African educators and practitioners in remote sensing and/or Earth Observation working in universities, government agencies and non-governmental organizations.  A university degree or post-graduate certificate in remote sensing preferred, and applicants should have some experience working on remote sensing applications.  The applicant should be familiar with remote sensing terminology.  
 
A copy of the completed application form should be directly submitted to the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research South Africa by no later than 5 October 2007 to Ms. Asanda Ntisana, antisana at csir.co.za ; Fax: 012 3345001. Applicants seeking financial assistance should ensure that their applications are received by CSIR no later than 28 September 2007.
