I agree with Kate. SAHIMS seems like just another activity that will further stretch the already stretched resources of Africans. Why can't there be more co-operative efforts working together than each trying to have their own pie.
I also notice that UN-ECA hardly features in SAHIMS - this must be a mistake, particulalry considering the significant work being done in exactly what SAHIMS is trying to achieve.

I note, unfortunately, in the SAHIMS activities for 2008, that SAHIMS plans to develop a new newsletter.... "Africa Data Dissemination Newsletter".... rather than contribute to the already prominent and widely read SDI-Africa newsletter. It's a pity that SAHIMS isn't building upon the existing SDI-Africa initiative, which has be including news, reference material, and sources on geographic information and statistics (like no other!) since the get go!

2008
Dear Colleagues,
Please find attached a synopsis of SAHIMS activities for 2008. Also
attached is the early bird announcement of the Africa Data Dissemination
workshop in Cape Town. This workshop was initially planned for October
2007 but we had to move it to 2008.
Please let me know your views about this. How can we best use this
opportunity to strengthen publication systems for statistical and
spatial data on MDG. We are also opened to suggestions on topics such as
ICT data dissemination platforms, Census mapping, Cartographic
visualization and communication of surveys and census data.
Your comments will help us fine-tune the workshop agenda and exhibition
features. We will be sharing this very soon. They will also be useful
for adjusting SAHIMS workplan for 2008.
Best regards
