Representatives of eight partner institutions took part in the closing workshop which was convened to collectively take stock of the project?s outputs and to explore avenues for the project?s achievements to be extended to other countries across the circum-Saharan region (North Africa and the Sahel). On the first day of the workshop, participants discussed the findings of a study of the structural vulnerability to drought in the three countries concerned by the project. The discussion touched on several themes including the concepts and methodologies used as well as the biophysical and socioeconomic factors considered in assessing vulnerability. The second day saw a hands-on training in drawing up maps of structural vulnerability. This was a highly useful exercise for participants who apprehended constraints and technical difficulties and acquainted themselves with the required tools. On the third day, participants dwelled on the project?s achievements and discussed ways of maintaining the outputs. http://www.oss-online.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=233&Itemid=521 Maghreb drought early warning system? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Japanese Oil, Gas and Metals Corporation (JOGMEC) signed the agreement with DGS for the training of Batswana geologists in remote sensing technology in 2008. It entails use of Japanese space satellites to survey for various minerals beneath soils in Botswana. The agreement covers training and technical support to DGS over a period of five years. Thus far, five DGS geologists have undergone the five levels of training necessary and are sufficiently qualified to utilise remote sensing. JOGMEC Director, Tetsuo Suzuki, told Mmegi?that in the following weeks, the five would be taken through seven training modules, starting with the introduction and ending with Ground Truth. According to the training schedule, after the introductory programme, the Batswana geologists will undergo training in Remote Sensing Basic Skills. This includes remote sensing applications for mineral exploration, identification of alteration zone, identification of Fe-O, Mg-OH minerals, classification of rocks by TIR, geological interpretation and comparing satellite imaging and geological mapping.
