THE CALL IS OPEN - Next cut-off: 20th September 2010 at 12:00 a.m. (Milan time)

The MONDE action focuses its attention on exploring new
ways of using satellite and computer-mapping technologies to
support long-term sustainable development in Africa. An
important issue in the region is monitoring land cover and land
cover changes at regional levels.
In the context of the PhD project, the objective is to carry out
research so as to be able to produce regional land cover and
land cover change maps from medium (10-30m) spatial
resolution satellite data. Tests will be carried out using
historical Landsat data. The lessons learnt in processing these
data will form a valuable input into producing a new data set
from the upcoming Sentinel 2 satellite. The research will focus
on producing the methodology for ensuring the geometric
fidelity, radiometric harmonization and classification process of
the data along with land cover change detection. The methods
will initially be tested on the wet and dry ecosystems of Africa.
The ideal candidate should have a University degree (giving
access to the PhD) in Environmental or Natural Sciences. A
Masters level qualification in Remote Sensing would be an
advantage.
Expertise in the field of image processing and GIS is required.
Knowledge of satellite image pre-processing and classification
and related issues is essential.
Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. The
knowledge of another community language would be an
advantage.
Relevant publications and presentations should be highlighted.

2) IES-2010-301023 - Forest cover mapping and monitoring of Central African
forests

THE CALL IS OPEN - Next cut-off: 20th September 2010 at 12:00 a.m. (Milan time)
The IES Action ‘TREES-3’ is looking for a postdoc
scientist who will contribute to the forest cover
change assessment from Earth Observation (EO)
data over Central Africa in the frame of the
Observatory for Central African Forests (OFAC).
The scientist will work on the refinement and
validation of large-scale continental geospatial
databases derived from satellite optical sensors
that document forest cover change/disturbance
over Central Africa and on their integration with
ground observations. He will also work on the
JRC contribution to the Observatory for Central
African Forests. This includes:
• General tasks of image processing for forest
change assessment and production of validated
forest maps at various resolutions
• GIS data ingestion and preparation of data for
publication on the OFAC web site
(www.observatoire-comifac.net)
The ideal candidate should have a PhD in
environmental sciences or related field (or a
University degree and 5 years of research
experience after the university degree giving
access to doctoral studies).
Experience in the field of geospatial techniques
(preferably remote sensing) is required.
Knowledge of GIS and remote sensing packages
is essential. An experience in spatial integration
between Earth Observation results and ground
observations would be an asset
Good knowledge of spoken and written English
and French is required. The knowledge of
another community language is an advantage.
Relevant publications and presentations should
be highlighted.
The Joint Research Centre is an equal
opportunity employer and is committed to
increasing the diversity of its staff. It welcomes
nominations of and applications from women
and minority groups.
