After years of lip work, local governments of Pakistan such as Government of
Punjab (GoPb) have taken initiative by setting up a platform for core
stakeholders of spatial data both from governmental and non governmental
agencies to join hands for spatial benefits. The Urban Dialogue Series 2008
is an example of such platform. The purpose of the platform is not only to
introduce a dialogue culture in the specific region but also to achieve
common goals such as SDI implementation through shared efforts at provincial
level. The Urban Unit (www.urbanunit.gov.pk) is developing Punjab Spatial
Data Infrastructure (PSDI) called as Integrated Regional Information Systems
(Iris™) which includes all the functionalities of SDI and is even striving
for a wider perspective as envisions the introductory document of The Urban
Unit. The Urban Unit was setup in March 2006 with in the Planning and
Development Department of the Govt. of the Punjab “for the use of hardware,
software and resources to achieve maximum benefits from spatial data and
maps for informed decision making” (The Urban Dialogue Series 2008, 2).
