Ph.D research studentship in Applied Geomorphology
Quantitative risk assessment of hydro-geomorphological processes
Deadline: 30 December 2007.
The main aim of the research is to develop and test a methodology for quantitative multi-hazard
risk assessment which combines the specific risks for different hydro-geomorphological
processes (e.g. landslides - incl. debris flows, rock falls and shallow landslides -, and floods) in a
single multi-hazard risk assessment within a GIS framework. The project focuses on the
comparison of specific risk of different landslide types with those from other hydrogeomorphological
hazards. High resolution remote sensing data will be used for elements at risk
mapping, and hazard assessment approaches will follow mostly the use of probabilistic models.
An important component will be the quantification of risk, using both direct and indirect effects of
potential hazardous events. Past disaster events will be analyzed in detail in order to derive
specific hazard and vulnerability information. Spatial multi-criteria evaluation will be applied
using spatial indicators for social, and environmental vulnerability. Specific attention will be given
to the quantification of uncertainty in the risk assessment process.
