Call for applications - two PhD research grants - Bolivia, Barcelona, Spain (EU citizenship or ability to fulfill immigration regulations)
“Conservación del bosque amazónico y territorios indígenas: Del conflicto a la colaboración.” Duration: September 2007- August 2010. The Institut de Ciencia i Tecnologia Ambientals (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is seeking two highly motivated Ph.D. students for a three-year longitudinal study integrating Remote Sensing, Ecology, and Social Sciences. The study will take place on the Bolivian Lowlands. The students will enroll at the Ph.D. program at ICTA-UAB and will be encouraged to pursue their dissertation within the scope of the project. Both candidates should have a strong background in the social or natural sciences, including courses in statistics and research methods (see the descriptions bellow for more detail). The research grant will cover the tuition cost and a yearly salary of 13.440 € for the duration of the project. A final decision on the funding for the 3rd year and other administrative details including
tuition fees will be released in September. This research is funded by the IV Convocatoria de Ayudas a la Investigación en Ecología y Biología de la Conservación de la Fundación del Banco de Bilbao-Vizcaya-Argentaria BBVA.
One Ph.D. research grant on Remote Sensing of Land Cover Change of the Bolivian Amazon -
We are looking for a Ph.D. student to work on the field of Remote Sensing of Land Cover Change of the Amazonian region of Beni (Bolivia). The director of this task is Dr. Agustin Lobo (http://www.ija.csic.es/gt/obster). Requirements: Under-graduate studies on Ecology, Environmental Science, Forestry or Physical Geography, with good academic records; Demonstrable experience on GIS and Remote Sensing (Master level on such areas or equivalent professional experience); Experience with Data processing environments such as R or Matlab; Experience with several GIS and RS software packages; Fluent at speaking Catalan, Spanish or English for communication at ICTA; - Ability to communicate in the Spanish language for the field work; Open mind, scientific enthusiasm, hard work capacity and ability to work on own initiative; Good interpersonal skills and naturally inclined towards collaboration; Ability to keep organized large and complex data structures and
documentation; EU citizenship or ability to fulfill immigration regulations. Other valuable skills; Demonstrable experience on field work; Scientific articles; Experience with Linux OS; Experience with meta-data; Fluent Spanish language; Fluent writing in English. We are looking for a Ph.D. student to work on participatory mapping with the Tsimane’ of lowland Bolivia. Requirements: Under-graduate studies with good academic records on Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Geography or related fields; Courses in statistics and research methods; Fluency in oral and written Spanish and English; Ability to spend long periods of field work in Bolivia (most of the research will be on the field); Open mind, scientific enthusiasm, hard work capacity and ability to work on own initiative; Good interpersonal skills and naturally inclined towards collaboration; Ability to keep organized large and complex data structures and documentation; EU citizenship or ability to fulfill immigration regulations.
