FAO/UNEP land cover training workshop, Quito, Ecuador,
15-19 November 2004
FAO/UNEP have recently launched the Global Land Cover
Network (GLCN) with the objective to improve the
availability of global information on land cover and
its dynamics, harmonizing land cover mapping and
monitoring at national, regional and global levels.
GLCN will generate essential data needed for
sustainable development, environmental protection,
food security and humanitarian programmes of the
United Nations, and of other international and
national institutions.
The GLCN initiative will bring together national
technical staff in the field of Remote Sensing/GIS,
Agriculture, Forestry, Pasture/Rangeland, Environment,
and Food Security to develop a network at the regional
and global scale to adopt the standardization of land
cover measurement methods and develop regional and
global land cover products. The collaboration will
involve not only data providers but also data users
and policy-makers.
Training will be provided on land cover mapping and
other geo-information technologies including the Land
Cover Classification System (LCCS). These methods can
be used on both national and regional projects. The
workshop will also be used to initiate regional
collaboration and GLCN projects.

La  FAO  y  el  PNUD  han  lanzado recientemente el
Global Land Cover Network  (GLCN)  con  los  objetivos
  de mejorar, a nivel mundial, la disponibilidad  de
la  información sobre la cobertura de la tierra y sus
cambios,  y armonizar las actividades de mapeo y
monitoreo de la cobertura  de  la  tierra  a los
niveles nacional, regional y
global. GLCN  producirá datos fundamentales para el
desarrollo sostenible, la protección  del  medio
ambiente,  la  seguridad  alimentaría  y  los
programas  humanitarios  de las Naciones Unidas y
otras instituciones nacionales e internacionales.    

La  iniciativa  GLCN  aportará  expertos  nacionales
en los campos de percepción  remota/sistemas  de
información geográfica, agricultura, bosques,  pastos,
  medio  ambiente,  y  seguridad  alimentaría con el
propósito  de  desarrollar  una  red a los niveles
regional y mundial para  la  adopción  de estándares
relativos a métodos de medida de la cobertura  de  la
tierra  y  al desarrollo de productos regionales y   
  globales sobre la cobertura de la tierra. La
colaboración involucrará no  solamente  a  productores
de datos sino también a los usuarios de datos y
tomadores de decisiones.
Para  proporcionar  esta  iniciativa  en  América  del
Sur, GLCN está organizando  un  taller  sobre el mapeo
de la cobertura de la tierra, que  se  llevará  a
cabo  en Quito, Ecuador, del 15-19 de noviembre, 2004.
El taller incluirá un entrenamiento sobre el uso del
Sistema de clasificación de la cobertura de la tierra
(LCCS) y otras tecnologías de  manejo  de  la
información espacial, que se pueden utilizar para
proyectos  nacionales y regionales.  Además, este
taller servirá para iniciar una colaboración regional
e identificar proyectos GLCN.
Este  taller  pretende  aportar  herramientas  de
trabajo  para  los funcionarios  nacionales
involucrados  en actividades de mapeo de la cobertura
de la tierra, en los países siguientes: Argentina,
Bolivia, Brasil,  Colombia  Ecuador, Guayana Francesa,
  Guyana, Paraguay, Perú, Surinam, Uruguay, y
Venezuela.
Si  Usted  está interesado en participar en este
taller y/o colaborar con  la  iniciativa  GLCN, favor
de completar el formulario al sitio web y devolverlo
con  su  CV  a la Secretaría de GLCN lo antes
posible; la selección de los participantes empezará el
20 septiembre 2004.
Es importante señalar que el taller se llevará a cabo
en inglés.
