Canadian agencies, organizations, academia, and companies are invited to attend one day seminar on geographic information standards. The event is being hosted by the Canadian General Standards Board -Committee on Geomatics and the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO/TC211, Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, and GeoConnections.

The Canadian General Standards Board is a federal government organization that offers user-centred, comprehensive standards development and conformity assessment services in support of the economic, regulatory, procurement, health, safety and environmental interests of our stakeholders — government, industry and consumers. TheCommittee on Geomatics and the Canadian Advisory Committee to ISO/TC211 are subcommittees of the Canadian General Standards Board responsible for the development of Canadian and international standards in geographic information, respectively.
The Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat provides advice and support to Treasury Board Ministers in their role of ensuring value for money. It approves Treasury Board information or technology standards (TBITS) for mandatory use throughout the federal government of Canada. 
GeoConnections is a national program, led by Natural Resources Canada, which collaborates with partners to expand and evolve the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI). The CGDI is a resource that enables Canadians to share, access, use, and combine location-based (i.e. geospatial) information over the Internet (http://www.geoconnections.org ). 
During this seminar, federal, provincial and territorial governments, industry, academia, and geomatics associations from Canada will:
get up to date information on existing Canadian and international standards in geographic information,
develop an understanding of their implementation and the benefit for interoperability,
develop an understanding and reasons to adopt them,
identify current and future needs,
recognize the importance to further contribute to the development of standards for sustainable geographic data management in GoC departments and for the CGDI.
Attendees will be discussing the benefits of geographic information standards in facilitating interoperability of data and applications accessible via the CGDI, and ways to harmonize geographic information standards activities. 
Participation to the seminar is free but the number of participants is limited. Those interested in attending are encouraged to register early (before January 11th, 2008) by email with Patricia Dolhan at patricia.a.dolhan at pwgsc.gc.ca .

L'Office des normes générales du Canada est un organisme du gouvernement fédéral qui offre des services d'élaboration de normes et d'évaluation de la conformité complets axés sur les clients en appui aux intérêts des intervenants (gouvernement, industrie et consommateurs) en matière d'économie, de réglementation, d'approvisionnement, de santé, de sécurité et d'environnement. Le comité sur la géomatique et le comité consultatif canadien à l'ISO/TC211 sont les sous comités de l'Office des normes générales du Canada responsables du développement des normes canadiennes et internationales en information géographique, respectivement. Le Secrétariat du Conseil du Trésor du Canada est chargé de fournir aide et conseils aux ministres du Conseil du Trésor qui portent attention à l'optimisation des ressources. Il approuve les normes du Conseil du Trésor sur la technologie ou l'information (NCTTI) en vue de leur utilisation obligatoire
 dans l'ensemble de l'administration fédérale. GéoConnexions est un programme national, dirigé par Ressources naturelles Canada, qui collabore avec des partenaires pour accroître et développer l'Infrastructure Canadienne de Données Géospatiales (ICDG). L'ICDG est une ressource qui permet aux canadiens/canadiennes de partager, accéder, utiliser, et intégrer de l'information basée sur la localisation (i.e. géospatiale) sur Internet (http://www.geoconnexions.org).
À ce séminaire, les gouvernements fédéral, provinciaux et territoriaux, les industries, les universités et les associations géomatiques du Canada :
recevront de l'information à jour sur les normes canadiennes and internationales existantes en information géographique,
développeront une compréhension sur leur implantation et intérêt pour l'interopérabilité,
développeront une compréhension et des raisons pour leur adoption,
identifieront les besoins actuels et futures,
reconnaîtront l'importance de contribuer davantage au développement des normes pour une gestion durable de l'information géographique dans les ministères canadiens et pour l'Infrastructure Canadienne de Données Géospatiales.
Les participants discuteront de l'intérêt des normes en information géographique pour faciliter l'interopérabilité des données et des applications accessibles par l'ICDG et des moyens pour l'harmonisation des activités de normalisation de l'information géographique.
La participation au séminaire est gratuite toutefois le nombre de participants est limité. Ceux et celles intéressé(e)s à y assister sont prié(e)s de s'enregistrer tôt (avant le 11 janvier 2008) par courriel auprès de Patricia Dolhan à patricia.a.dolhan at pwgsc.gc.ca.
