BC Ministry of Environment and GeoConnections Enable Water Stewardship
August 22 2007
GeoConnections and the BC Ministry of Environment are partnering to greatly increase the amount and availability of water data offered through the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure and the BC Ministry of Environment's Water Resources Atlas. Using Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure compliant Web Map Services, the atlas will enable users to access a number of previously unavailable datasets. These datasets include aquifer classification, aquifer characterization, dams, floodplains, flood protection, snow survey sites, surface water quantity, water quality, watersheds, and water wells.
Access to these kinds of water resources data is vital to managing and protecting water. Water resources data are needed by a wide audience, including public health inspectors, emergency managers, aboriginal land managers and environmental consultants. By partnering with GeoConnections on this project, the BC Ministry of Environment will make its Water Resources Atlas an even more valuable environmental, social, and economic planning tool.
