EcoMonitor: Northern Ecosystem Climate Change Monitoring
Canada is the steward of many globally important ecosystems, including 25 per cent of the world's wetlands and boreal forests. The Canadian Forest Service, with the support of the Canadian Space Agency's Government Related Initiatives Program (GRIP), has begun a northern ecosystem climate change monitoring project focused upon developing and prototyping satellite Earth Observation (EO) tools and monitoring protocols to provide the capacity to assess, monitor, and report on the forest areas and plains in northern ecosystems. CFS and its partners will collect detailed and statistically robust information to characterize a wide-range of terrestrial based ecosystem attributes using EO products; develop and prototype EO for processing and interpretation of monitoring program attributes; develop and prototype approaches that are amenable to automation, including image segmentation; produce otherwise unavailable information for Canada’s northern ecosystems;
 utilize a sample based monitoring system to enable Canada-wide reporting, across all sectors, of fine scale attributes; communicate with stakeholders to ensure that a wide-range of information needs are met and to engage as possible the stakeholders in development and testing.
