 Building Safer Communities Through Integrated Risk Assessment
FrontLine Security magazine recently published an article by Pierre Bilodeau, public safety industry manager for Esri Canada. The article features Pathways, a framework that aims to link natural hazard risk assessment with community planning. Pathways is powered by an Esri-based risk assessment software program developed by Natural Resources Canada’s Earth Sciences Sector and several partners.

 Deloitte Includes Geospatial Visualization in Tech Trends for 2012 
Deloitte’s annual Technology Trends report examines technology put to practical business use, including analytics, mobility, social, cloud and cyber security. The 2012 list of business enablers includes Geospatial Visualization, which allows humans to comprehend complex concepts by linking data to geography using maps.

 OCUL Wins the 2012 OLITA Award for Technical Innovation 
The Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) received an award from the Ontario Library and Information Technology Association (OLITA) for its Scholars GeoPortal. Built on Esri technology, the portal offers Ontario university students and researchers with access to OCUL geospatial data collections to improve their research.

Proposed Amendment to European Directive on Re-use of Public Sector Information 
SDI Magazine reported on the European Commission’s proposed amendment to the 2003 European Union Directive on the re-use of public sector information. The amendment includes making re-use a legal obligation, not a suggested best practice.

German Satellite Systems Closer to Providing a 3D Map of the Earth
After a year in service, two German Earth observation satellites have completely mapped the Earth’s entire land surface for the first time. The data will create the world's first single-source, high-precision, 3D digital elevation model of the Earth.

USGS & NGA Announce Enhanced Global Elevation Model
The US Geological Survey (USGS) and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) collaborated in developing the Global Multi-resolution Terrain Elevation Data 2010 (GMTED2010). The suite contains 7 new raster elevation products for various spatial resolutions and incorporates the current best available global elevation data.

Culturally Closed Geodata - A Barrier to Development 
Asian Surveying and Mapping published an article that notes closed culture as another barrier in developing and innovating geospatial data. Other factors cited for for data being confined included data formats, policy, lack of resources and incompatibility.

New WMO Weather and Climate Information System Becomes Operational
The new World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Information System (WIS) will improve and expand the current exchange of weather, climate and water data – and cut the costs involved. The system will make it easier to find, use and share meteorological observations and products with various stakeholders, such as the research and disaster risk reduction communities.

Environment Canada Radar Image Service Now Available on ArcGIS Online
Updated every hour, this service uses a custom Python script to parse the published radar image files and then uses the Python Imaging Library (PIL) to process the radar images. Georeferenced image files of precipitation are served by ArcGIS for Server.

Finland to Open Digital Topographic Data 
On May 1, 2012, the National Land Survey of Finland (NLS) will open its topographic datasets for the public to use free of charge. The NLS believes that making this data available will provide the Finnish society with significant economic benefits.

2,000th Public Sector Organization Signs Up for Geographic Data Sharing
The UK Ordnance Survey has reached a milestone as Tatenhill Parish Council became the 2,000th member to join the Public Sector Mapping Agreement (PSMA). The agreement delivers improved planning and service delivery through the use of centrally funded digital geographic data.

INSPIRE SDIs in Europe: 2011 State of Play Reports Now Available
These reports describe, analyze and assess the status of national SDIs for 34 countries in Europe. The summary report includes an overview of indicators and change table, as well as a detailed survey aimed at collecting more quantitative and qualitative information on several aspects of INSPIRE & NSDI implementation. Feedback is welcome.

GIM International featured the results of WebGIS performance tests conducted during the development of the Boston Water and Sewer WebGIS. The authors tested two models: centralized and distributed.

Sierra Leone Launches Portal for Interactive Transparency & Ideas Generation
The new Transparency-International portal is designed to capture the country's government projects in prose and still photographs/video. It includes an interactive Internet forum through which citizens can ask Sierra Leone President Ernest Koroma and his cabinet questions and they can respond through a blog.

What is scalability?
Scalability is often used to describe a performance aspect of a Web mapping site or other system, but it has nothing to do with map scales. It refers to a system’s ability to handle increased workloads or number of users without a noticeable decrease in performance. An algorithm, design, networking protocol, program or other system is said to scale, if it is suitably efficient and practical when applied to large situations (e.g., a large input dataset or a large number of participating nodes in the case of a distributed system).
