an aside: perhaps if librarians were more engaged in metadata development, the geospatial community might actually move forward on metadata development!  Note this job announcement as a specific instance.
 
VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT 

Title: Spatial and Numeric Data Librarian 
Salary: $42,000 
Responsible To: GIS Librarian, Government Documents Department 

JOB SUMMARY: 

The Spatial and Numeric Data Librarian is a new position in the Government Documents Department that is responsible for providing spatial and numeric data resources for a diverse academic user community. In consultation with the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Librarian, plans will be developed and implemented for selecting, organizing, delivering, updating, and archiving digital spatial and numeric data collections as well as appropriate metadata to support campus wide GIS and remote sensing activities. This position will further assist the GIS Librarian in providing spatial data reference services, individual consultations and instruction to faculty, staff and students as requested. In addition, the incumbent will supervise the departments Web activities and act as the primary computer systems liaison. As a tenure track library faculty member the individual will serve on Library, University and professional committees, plus participate in grant development and implementation
 as appropriate. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Collaborates with the GIS Librarian, Map and Imagery Library, and Digital Library Center to plan and implement digital spatial and numeric data collection initiatives, policies and procedures. Maintains current technical expertise regarding spatial and numeric data and evolving applications. 

2. Consults with the Digital Projects Metadata Librarian and the Digital Library Center to develop spatial and numeric data collection metadata. Keeps abreast of current and emerging digital spatial and numeric metadata standards and practices. 

3. Provides spatial and numeric data and software reference services as well as individual consultations and instruction to faculty, staff and students. 

4. Provides reference service for Government Documents and Map and Imagery collections 

5. Supervises the Department's Computer Applications Coordinator, and coordinates systems liaisons in Government Documents and the Map and Imagery Library. 

6. Monitors and integrates activities of the Department's Web page developers, and responds to requests from the Library's Web Manager. 

7. Participates in planning, policy formation, and decision making related to Government Documents services, collections and new technologies. 

8. Participates in Library, University and professional committees. 

9. Participates in grant development and implementation as appropriate. 

10. Works towards meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion, including publishing and other professional activities. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required: 

1. Masters degree either in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or in another relevant field (Geography, Geomatics, Urban Planning, etc.). 
2. Academic or work experience with current GIS, remote sensing, and database development technologies. 
3. Previous experience developing and maintaining Web-based information delivery. 
4. Demonstrated supervisory skills. 
5. Strong public services approach and outlook. 
6. Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
7. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, students, and co-workers. 
8. Demonstrated potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion. 

The University of Florida libraries participate in the University's graduate level GIS certificate program (http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/icgis/), as well as teaching courses in Geomatics. In cooperation with UF's Digital Library Center recent project activities included creating spatial datasets and establishing an Internet mapping site for the Map and Image Library's collection of historical Florida air photos (http://web.uflib.ufl.edu/digital/collections/FLAP/).
