fyi.... UK rethinking its approach to metadata service....

AGI invited expressions of interest for a research project to investigate the future technology for a UK metadata service (deadline for responses was December 22, 2006)
AGI have operated the GI metadata service, gigateway on behalf of the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) for several years. A GI metadata service is fundamental to a national Spatial Data Infrastructure, and the future form of such a service is currently under detailed consideration.
As part of the investigation into aspects of any future national GI metadata service, it is proposed to take a fresh look at the technology required to underpin such a service. This will include issues relating to operating over distributed nodes. Any new technology adopted will need to be in widespread use and based upon International Standards.
The underlying technology at the heart of the current gigateway service is the Z39.50 protocol with GEO profile. This is based upon the old US FGDC metadata standard. However, nowadays there is a requirement for the metadata standard to be based on the current international standard ISO 19115 Geographic information - Metadata. One such subset of ISO 19115 is UK GEMINI, which will be revised to align it with a European core metadata set currently being defined for INSPIRE.
The deliverable of the project will be a report outlining the technology options and their impacts, including on the node providers. This work might be suitable for an academic organisation with appropriate experience in such services.
