Computers & Geosciences Call for Papers, Special Issue on "Progressive Transmission of Spatial Datasets in the Web Environment"
The internet has become the primary tool for both information and data delivery in many fields, ranging from academia through industry to the home user. Contemporaneously geographic information, not just in the form of maps, but also data, has been transformed from the preserve of a small clique of "data keepers" to having widespread availability through web-based geographic information systems (Web-GIS) to an equally wide range of users. However, delivering spatial data exposes a dilemma between narrow network bandwidths and the large volumes of the spatial datasets to be delivered. To overcome this dilemma, one promising solution is to deliver spatial datasets at increasing levels of detail (LoD) from the server side to client side. The special issue will focus on recent developments of techniques, methodologies, algorithms, and applications of progressive transmission of spatial datasets in the web environment. Submissions may address, but are not
limited to the following topics:
Level-of-Detail models of spatial data
Algorithms for multi-scale representation of spatial data
Data models for on-line simplification of spatial data
Lossy and lossless compression of spatial data
Pattern recognition for multi-resolution representation of spatial data
Web-based novel architectures for the progressive transmission of spatial data
Evaluation of progressive transmission methods for spatial data
The Editors of this Special Issue seek original and novel contributions on such topics. All submissions will be peer-reviewed in line with the policy of Computers & Geosciences. Authors must prepare manuscripts according to the Instructions for Authors of Computers & Geosciences, available at http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/398/authorinstructions .
Manuscripts should be submitted via the Elsevier on-line submission system (http://ees.elsevier.com/cageo) by October 1, 2007. Please select the special issue "Spatial Datasets" when you reach the "Article Type" step in the submission process. Publication is planned for October 2008.
