Call for participation: Workshop on Global Scientific Data Infrastructures: the
big data challeges
12-13 May 2011
Hotel La Palma, Island of Capri, Italy,
Theme and Objectives
The next generation of scientific data infrastructures have to efficiently and
effectively support data-intensive multidisciplinary research. In order to
develop such data infrastructures several data, system, organizational and
policy challenges must be successfully tackled. This Workshop will address the
main data challenges.
They include data modeling, data management, and data services challenges.
Program
The program features 15 invited high level scientists who will address the
following topics:
S. Abiteboul, INRIA (Distributed Catalog)
M. Lenzerini. Univ. of Rome1 (Data Integration)
P. Buneman, Univ. of Edinburgh (Data Provenance)
C. Batini, Univ. of Milan (Data Quality)
M. Atkinson, Univ. of Edinburgh (Data Use)
Y. Ioannidis, Univ. of Athens (Data Optimization/Data Processing)
A. Das Sarma, Stanford Univ. (Data Uncertainty)
C. Thanos, ISTI/CNR (Data Interoperability)
E. Bertino, Purdue Univ. (Data Security)
D. Fellner, Fraunhofer (Data Visualization)
D. Pedreschi, Univ. of Pisa (Data Mining)
T. Sellis, Technical Univ. of Athens (Managing Streaming Spatial Data)
N. Spyratos, Univ. of Paris Sud (A Funcional Model for Data Analysis)
S. Ceri, Politecnico of Milan (Data Search)
A representative of the SciDB project TBC.
The talks will briefly introduce a specific topic, describe the
state-‐of-‐the-‐art of the research and practice in this topic focusing on
open research issues and indicating research directions. Special sessions will
be dedicated to lively discussions, exchange of ideas, etc.
Audience
The Workshop is addressed to highly motivated researchers belonging to
constituencies whose members use data-intensive methods (biologists,
astronomers, etc.) as well as to constituencies whose members create such
methods (computer scientists, engineers, etc.).
Venue
This Workshop will be held at the “Hotel La Palma” in the island of Capri,
Italy.
Registration
The participation is free and the organizers will be able to offer the
coffee‐breaks, working lunches, and a social
dinner. The participants have to cover their own travel and lodging expenses.
To register to the Workshop, fill in the online form at:
