A scoring model for evaluating geospatial web services — A case study of OGC Web Map Service
Presented at 19th International Conference on Geoinformatics, 24-26 June 2011, Shanghai, China

Over the past decade, we have witnessed the increasing development of geospatial web service in earth science research field. And, many specifications/standards were developed and proposed to facilitate geospatial data sharing and interoperability. So, geospatial data provider can publish their information according to the relevant specifications and standards through the Internet. However, a lot of online sharing resources of geographic information often cannot be accessible. Focusing on evaluating the distributed OWS resources, we propose a service-oriented scoring model to rate relevant sharing geospatial information and quality of services. Specifically, (1) the checking rules and schedules are defined to monitor the current status of OWS servers; (2) a model based on performance is proposed and used for identifying better services; (3) An experiment prototype using WMS as an example is implemented to demonstrate the performance evaluation by the
 proposed scoring model.
